PHOTOGRAPHY
I'm not a serious photographer...I just enjoy taking pictures! Here are a few of my favorites from over the years. Hope you like them, too. : )
GOFF ROAD, CORNING, NY - 1989 or so
I took most of these when I was in high school using...a Kodak disc camera! I wonder whether students today realize that all the pre-digital-era photos they see required the photographer to wait days or weeks to see how they turned out.
RUSSIA - 1992
I took all of these photos on my first trip to Russia, while I was in college. Before I left, I saved up to buy a Pentax P-30 T, which was a manual focus SLR. I loved what it could do.
A few notes about what you're seeing... Having grown up in the lovely small town of Corning, NY, I had never ridden a city bus, let alone one as packed as the one in Akademgorodok, shown in photo #5. Photo #6 was taken on a day we spent on Lake Baikal. We actually got to sail on the lake; I remember drinking hot tea in the cold wind, perched on the boat deck, before a storm forced us to head back. I took photo #8 for two reasons: first, because it demonstrates the abundant generosity of Russians to their guests, and second, because of the thoughtful Fourth of July celebration they organized for us even though it wasn't their holiday. Photo #14 is poignant in any case, as we look through rusted bars upon a chalk princess, and it becomes even more so when we discern that it is the Russian word "prostitutka" that has been covered over by a larger-than-life reassertion of childhood innocence.

MOUNT SAVIOUR MONASTERY, PINE CITY, NY - VARIOUS YEARS
I grew up not far from this monastery. I am not Catholic, but discovering the monastery felt like finding a spiritual home. I never miss a chance to visit it when I go back.
ROSEMONT, ARDMORE, AND RADNOR, PA; LINDLEY, NY - VARIOUS YEARS
It's true that the sun is so often photographed that it's almost ridiculous to post photos of it...but I will anyway, because it is so often breathtakingly beautiful! Many of the photos below were taken locally, on my way to or from work in 2014 (I pulled over!) I regret the power lines in several of these photos, but on the other hand, they remind me that although sometimes you have to search for beauty, it's always there somewhere. Remember to look up!
